Friends:
I have been negligent in posting at my site for the past 3 weeks, as my life has taken an unexpected twist. I have been entirely consumed by a deeply personal project and haven’t felt right updating to “promote” any of my own ventures at JBTV, Angels & Kings and elsewhere.
I can’t possibly explain the range of emotions that have come along with this project. Nor can I possibly thank enough those who have joined me in the fight. I can, however, share an overview of what has happened.
One of my dearest friends on the planet, Madina Lake bassist, Matthew Leone, was the victim of an assault at the beginning of July.
Matthew came to the aid of a woman being physically assaulted by her husband on the 1300 block of West Ohio Street. After intervening and calling Chicago police, Matthew was beaten by the man and left unconscious in the street. His brain injuries were so severe that multiple surgeries have been required to remove and reattach portions of his skull. In March, while I was on tour with the band in Europe, Matthew’s health insurance lapsed, leaving him financially uncovered in this horrific situation. He is currently recovering at home.
In the days following the attack on Matthew, I co-founded Through the Pain – a non-profit benefit alliance created by Matthew’s friends in support of his yet untold medical, legal and rehabilitation costs. Partnering with Sweet Relief, a non-profit charity that maintains a financial fund from which professional musicians can draw from when in need of medical care or financial assistance, we are holding a series of benefit concerts, auctions and special events.
The first concert features an acoustic set from Nathan and Mateo of Madina Lake and performances by AM Taxi, The Fold, The Lifeline and David Costa takes place at Double Door (21+) on Saturday, August 21st. Tickets are available HERE.
The second show will be held at Hard Rock Hotel Chicago (21+) on Sunday, August 22nd. The lineup includes The Lovehammers, Kill Hannah, Scott Lucas of Local H, Makeshift Prodigy and The Frantic. In addition to hosting the concert, Hard Rock Hotel Chicago has created an exclusive room offer whereby the hotel will donate $15 for every room booked during the entire month of August. Tickets for this show go on sale Saturday (7/31) at 10 AM via www.throughthepain.org. Prices for each show are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
In addition to organizing these and other benefit shows, we have launched a big-ticket, International auction which is currently being held through eBay and can be directly accessed via www.throughthepain.org. Notable auction items include: a one-of-a-kind Lego sculpture commissioned by Pete Wentz for his Clandestine Industries clothing line, a prototype Washburn guitar built exclusively for Dan Donegan of Chicago-based band Disturbed – signed and donated by Dan himself and a signed platinum record from the band A Perfect Circle’s debut, platinum record Mer De Noms.
For the most updated list of active items available, click HERE.
Direct cash donations can also be made to Matthew Leone’s Sweet Relief fund through www.throughthepain.org. As of today, Wednesday July 28th, our Sweet Relief fund is over $34,000. 100% of this money will go directly to Matthew.
There are a million and one things I would like to add, but I wouldn’t even know where to begin. If you have helped Matthew in any way, please know that you are changing his life and the world for the better. I speak for the Leone family, Madina Lake and myself when I say that we are eternally grateful to have experienced such selfless love from people around the world.
Thank you infinitely,

I checked in – live from Times’ Square in New York City – with Chicagoist host (and my former WONC radio colleague) Karl Klockars about my oddly-publicized run as a finalist on the Rod Blagojevich jury.
Listen to the full conversation below! Karl did a great interview; he asked real questions – political and fun – about what it was like to sit on the stand in that courtroom. Really enjoyed being a guest on the show! Almost as much as I enjoyed being rejected as a juror..
Original post, interview on Chicagoist.com ::
In this mid-week entry to the Chicagoist Podcast Series, while the rest of the press danced around identifying former Q101 jock Ryan Manno and current JBTV host as a potential juror for the Blagojevich trial, we go right ahead and get his ass on the phone. We talk about the jury process, about being just feet away from our former Governor and discussing radio bits about him with the judge, and about the press’s reaction in the wake of his courtroom experience. And what the hell do you wear when you’re going face to face with the Federal courts? And all this happened in one day’s work.

Angels & Kings CHI presents another FREE “One Man(no) Show!” This Wednesday (6/23), we’re featuring 2 of Chicago’s finest.. Par Avion and Snowsera ::
Incredibly noteworthy, aside from the show, is that I will have a pair of exclusive, private and VIP passes to see Against Me! perform live on our JBTV HD Soundstage! We’ll have a plain ‘ol register to win box – fill out a form and hope like hell that you win the chance to be in the studio audience at the July 3rd episode taping! Someone at this week’s show will be leaving with a pair. Guaranteed.
Back to the show.. both of these bands have been great friends for a long time, and I’m stoked to finally showcase them on our world-renowned AK stage! Here’s a bit on both:
Since 2007, Par Avion has worked harder than just about any band in Chicago. Granted, a lot of bands work hard.. but don’t work smart. These guys work both! They’ve put out 4 great records, with a 5th on the way. And somehow, they’ve found time to develop a truly memorable live show.. they’ve been tapped to open for Angels & Airwaves and Hollywood Undead. Or Perhaps you caught their sets at Milwaukee’s SummerFest and SXSW in Austin, TX. They’re making all of the right moves. Great look, vibe, sound, style and people!
Listen: Par Avion – Plastic
Aside from what it means to you, the name means nothing. The music.. means a lot to many.
From the official Snowsera bio: “When vocalist Bill Arteaga, bassist Nate Christenson, guitarist Ian Erard and drummer Jeff Wagner formed Snowsera in the spring of 2007, the four University of Illinois students deliberately chose a name devoid of any existing meaning. Instead, their moniker, like their music, is an open invitation to each listener – one which bids them to imbue it with personal experiences and emotions.” Nicely done!
Since 2007, Snowsera has brought its high-impact live show to over hundreds of venues across the US, sharing the stage with …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, This Is Me Smiling, State & Madison, Company of Thieves and more!
The band has received loads of radio love with “So Subtle” and “Trends” – they were even honored with the titles of Best New Artist and Best Live Performance at the 2008 WPGU Local Music Awards, as well as being named the station’s inaugural “Local Band of the Week” in April.
I assume that if the band were typing this, they’d say something like “Come see us at Angels & Kings. And tell us what Snowsera means to you..”
Listen: Snowsera – Push and Pull

LIVE from Chicago.. it’s this week’s “The Abe Kanan Show” w/ special guest, former Q101 jock.. SLUDGE!
- Sludge makes his AKS debut and it’s a ball-busting fest of epic proportions! Not only was he my mentor at Q101 in Chicago, he was Abe’s morning drive co-host on Richmond’s Y101 – and they were ROOMMATES! Twisted stories of sexual conquests (once with diarrhea), bizarre habits (napping with Pantera cranked to 11, shredding documents at 2 AM) and ordering the entire menu from KFC. It’s weird, disgusting and pathetic.. but all 100% true!
- I have some more info, thoughts and commentary from my time as Blago Juror #171.
- Danny Gaga has the celeb gossip roundup – did Obama get drunk at the Sox/National game? Plus, Danny’s still standing by his theory on the “Golden Girls Curse” and how did Manute Bol really die?

This Wednesday, like every other for the past 60+ straight, Angels & Kings CHI presents a FREE “One Man(no) Show!” This week, it’s another 2-band bill for the price of none, feat. Manbirdbelly and Paperbear ::

Sometimes, it really is a wonder that we’ve been able to, not only consistently pull this off, but consistently grow the “One Man(no) Show” into such a loyal and unique brand. No other venue in the city (or country) gives away so much quality, free music. Most of them think we’re crazy. And, for that, I want to thank YOU for continuing to support the heart of Chicago music and my amazing partners at Angels & Kings! This is where it lives and breathes..
Okay.. so the elephant in the room?
At first glance of this week’s band names, I’ve been told that it appears that we’re dangerously close to having the dreaded Manbearpig show up and commandeer the mic. Let me assure you that we’ve beefed up security, background checked the bands and alerted transportation officials in South Park. Manbearpig will not be allowed in.
I’m super serial.
Honestly, I’m always so pumped to invite new bands, new faces and new ideas into our established family. Not only is there room for the deserving, it’s a win for all of us who love to feel this thing push forward and reinvent. I’ve never worked with either of this week’s bands, so I can’t personally speak to their live sets. But, based on great words from people and sources I trust, it looks like we’re in for another good one:
“The stage presence of Paperbear is incredible! The music is enough to shake the soul, but the connection the performers make with the audience is enough to tickle the heart. Love the sound. Love the look. Keep your eyes open for this local gem!”
- CHICAGO.com/music
“Who the hell is Manbirdbelly? After last week’s show at Quenchers, we should all be asking this. Despite it being a bar, Manbirdbelly rocked it like a proper venue!”
- Radio Free Chicago
Take an audio test drive. Download a free MP3 from each:

Ohhh, and I’m out of town for this week’s show. Coincidentally, spending my Wednesday night at AK NYC (no escape!) Regrettably I won’t make it to this week’s Chicago showcase, so I expect each of you to provide me with a full report. I also expect you to do a shot of Jameson for me.

I guess “anonymity” is all relative..
I’ve been given the all clear to confirm that I was, until yesterday, Blago Juror #171.
Imagine my surprise when I was randomly selected to serve as a juror on the Blagojevich trial. Imagine anyone’s surprise to get picked for this one!
Imagine my surprise when I made it thru the first round of cuts, even after I had indicated on my questionnaire that I had publicly talked about the case on Chicago’s radiowaves. I thought, for sure, that’d be an automatic DQ.
Imagine my surprise when I sat in the front of the courtroom, 10 feet from our ex-Governor and told Judge Zagel that I had often poked fun at Blago on the radio.. all while making direct eye contact with Blago for 8 minutes. Awwwkward.
And imagine my surprise when I got in my car… and heard WBBM-AM reporting on the fact that I had just left the courtroom.
Of course, WBBM didn’t give my name. Nor did the Chicago Tribune, Sun-Times, CBS, NBC, NPR, FOX, ABC, WGN, WTTW or the dozens of others outlets who ran with the story. I am surprised, after reading and watching some of the stories, that they didn’t at least try to give it in Pig Latin!?
A friend texted me yesterday afternoon and said, “I think they’re talking about you on NBC. At least it sounds like you. And they showed a courtroom sketch of the side of your head. At least it looked like your head.” Anyone know where I can buy courtroom sketches?
I do find it interesting that such an epic legal case, with so much emphasis on the anonymity of jurors (it’s all we were told for more than a week), would allow the media to thoroughly detail a jurors well-publicized and easily searcheable professional history.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand that it’s fair game to disclose identity after a juror has been dismissed. At that point, you’re 100% irrelevant. But I was still very much in the prospective pool until late yesterday afternoon; long after the local news had all played connect the dots.
I don’t mind so much for me, primarily because I was excused from serving (plus a little media massage is good for business). But having just experienced, first-hand, the implications of being flooded with random people asking “You’re on the Blago jury?,” I feel that it’s a rather sloppy precedent to set and allow going forward. What if it had been a trial for a famous mob boss who had henchmen with a penchant for making house calls? I wouldn’t have gone home.
Maybe this helps to better illustrate my point.. How did I find out I was dismissed as a juror? By watching the 5 o’clock news. That seems broken to me.
Again, I don’t mean to get too far away from the lighthearted nature of my personal experience. I’m talking more about the principle.
I know, on a journalistic level, having a member of the media on Blago’s jury makes for a snazzy feature piece du jour. But the civil fundamentals of guarding anonymity, while someone is still up for high-profile (or low-profile) jury selection, should be considered on an integral level by a media granted access to report. At least in my naive little world, constitutional protection trumps a headline grab.
I’ve been contacted by some outlets asking to do interviews about the entire experience. And I’m happy to oblige now that it’s over. I’ll post the links to anything, if you’re curious in hearing more about the wild process.
** While I was typing this, one of my Mom’s co-workers emailed me this clip from last night’s episode of “Chicago Tonight,” where Phil Ponce asks the reporter to give my identity on live TV.
Oh, and Rod’s hair looks even more ridiculous when he’s sitting next to you.
All rise,

LIVE from Chicago.. Episode 25 of “The Abe Kanan Show” is ready for audio inhalation.
This Week >>
- What ever happened to John Goodman? He hasn’t been seen on TV much lately, but that doesn’t mean he’s not been heard. Imagine the sound a morbidly obese man narrating a porno film while sucking down a reuben. We have the audio of John’s most recent professional endeavor.
- Danny Gaga joins us with the latest entertainment scoop where Rue McClanahan’s death reveals the mysterious “Golden Girls curse!” Now that he’s said it, I can’t believe no one has noticed it. It’s freaky. And real.
- Nick “the Italian” offers another insightful commentary on thick women in too-small clothes. I think he tells a young lady that she “looks like 10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag.” Cassanova is here. Take notes.
- And have we witnessed the death of the tattoo? What about the mohawk? A discussion of the things that were once reserved for a distinct handful, but have seemingly been killed off and ruined by douchebags.

Wednesday (6/9) :: Angels & Kings presents another FREE “One Man(no) Show!”
Really dynamic 2-band bill this week feat. Danny Chaimson and Orgone ::
First things first.. You’ve committed to the Indian. You’ve committed to the Cup. You’ve committed to celebrating the championship in the city. And, hopefully, you’ve already committed to taking a “sick day” on Thursday. No doubt, the loop will be the center of the universe on Wednesday night.. so we’re putting on a proper party at the corner of Clark & Huron!
You know ‘where’ and ‘why.’ Here’s a slapshot of the ‘who’ and ‘how.’ See what I did there? Slapshot? Right.
He was a piano prodigy by age 4. At 10, he started writing his own music. By the time he turned 12, he formed a band and was already playing shows. Between then and now, Danny Chaimson has toured with and played as a sideman for O.A.R., Mike Doughty (Soul Coughing), Shwayze w/ Cisco Adler, The Southland, Jem and loads more. Basically, the dude’s got a killer bio and a cred sheet 10 miles long.
“Young Blood, Old Soul” (on newly launched L.A. indie Cold Classic), is the debut ’solo’ album from Chaimson and his backing band – the 11th Hour. It’s much an ass-shaker as it is an eye-opener. Listen to the first single..
And the people say:
“The disc is an uber-catchy blast of laid-back, pop-based soul-funk, as if Billy Joel’s been staying up late listening to Curtis Mayfield.” – RedEye Chicago
“Chaimson’s band is tight and play a blend of soul and funk that is seldom heard these days. Think Jack Johnson on amphetamines.” – SongsIllinois.net
“His presence demands attention as he masters dexterity, singing and pounding keys with seeming effortlessness.” – ChicagoMusicNow.com
“A loosely grooving set of tunes steeped in gritty blue eyed soul, west coast funk, and a wealth of classic soul & groove rock influences from coast-to-coast- Danny and his players have the chops and the melodic sensibilities to do them all justice…and his work on the Fender Rhodes is fantastic” – DustyGroove.com
I’m sold.
ORGONE >>
Before Bonnaroo gets Orgone.. we get ‘em! And we might need a bigger stage!? This Los Angeles based 9-piece is recognized worldwide for their raw studio recordings and exciting live sets of hard hitting afro-soul & funk.
Think of Orgone as a scenic musical journey from the sound of Los Angeles to horn and percussion driven Lagos to a New York club and to the bustling sounds of New Orleans.
The band’s reputation amongst the funk, soul, and hip hop fraternity is further backed-up by an impressive and ever growing resume that includes a spot in a new Adidas campaign, a tour with and backing band for Bun B (from UGK) plus shows with Pharcyde, De La Soul, Too Short, Macy Gray, Al Green and many others. To top it off, most of the group can be heard on recent recordings by Alicia Keys, Estelle, Anthony Hamilton and Jennifer Hudson.
Hear it:
- 710 North Clark Street (Clark & Huron)
- Doors at 9p / Music at 10:30p
- FREE meter parking after 9
- NO cover .. NO ticket needed
